Mothers with Careers
The novel dramatizes the modern dilemma of whether or not a woman ought to leave her child in the hands of someone else in order to work in a career that she does not strictly need to work at for survival in order to explore the fears and pressures placed upon women in this situation. Myriam is an educated, ambitious young woman who does not need to work in order to survive. Her husband has an exciting, well-paying career and their finances are under control. When she first has children, she cannot imagine ever wanting to leave them in the care of someone else, not even for an evening. But, as time goes by, she becomes restless with the inertia and stagnancy of her life as a stay-at-home-mother. She changes her mind about what she wants, and she decides she wants to go back...
