Summary
Chapter 9 returns to the first-person narrator. The mother explains that she is with Joshua and that she feels great. She reflects on “having trouble trusting any of [her] decisions” (126). She remembers meeting Dr. H. The mother tells herself that she needs to stop reading the news about Midas’s abduction and the medias’ obsession with the story. The mother admits to going on a message board and planting information about a registered sex offender near Winnie’s apartment.
Chapter 10 opens with an email about 8-week milestones. Francie thinks about times when children go missing but are found unharmed. It is five days after the abduction and the police are tight-lipped. Francie reflects on the “loss of her own three children” (133), the first to an abortion that her mother insisted on and two miscarriages. Francie tries calling Winnie several times, but gets no answer...
