Summary
Chapter 5 opens with an email about co-sleeping. Colette is on a subway platform and sees a picture of Winnie on a newspaper thinking how the story is “on the brink of becoming national news” (66) after Winnie made a video asking for Midas to be returned. Colette remembers a conversation with Winnie about motherhood and Winnie’s comment that people tell new mothers what they will gain and never mentions “what we have to lose” (69). Colette goes to city hall to meet with the mayor about her ghostwriting job. While waiting in the mayor’s office, Colette spies a folder with Midas’s name on it. Colette snoops through the file, seeing a photo of a Middle Eastern man in the file. Colette is relieved when her meeting with the mayor is canceled.
