Summary
In Chapter 60, Margo tells April that her father is dying. April does not want to go back to Little River. She imagines herself jumping into the ocean but gets in her car instead. Before the narrator arrives in her hometown in Chapter 61, Margo tells her that her father is “already gone” (311). April keeps driving because she needs Margo.
When she arrives in Little River, in Chapter 62, she visits Margo at the diner. That evening, her old friend tells her that when she left town “Gary went to talk [to her father] to make him come [after her]” (317). Margo let her think that he stayed away because she asked him to; she did not want April to know that her father did not care enough to ensure that his daughter was safe.
