Jorge Segren

Jorge Segren is the narrator of the story. His age is unstated, but he appears to be an adolescent or post-adolescent young man. He is the son of Magnus and Hed Segren, and he appears to demonstrate a distinct amount of sympathy for the Pedersen boy, who almost freezes to death in the winter. Jorge also demonstrates consistent aggravation with Pa and Hans, as he views them as cowardly and petty. When Jorge, Pa, and Hans arrive at the Pedersens’ house, he becomes so frustrated with their equivocation that he points a gun at them and angrily calls them cowards.
