Summary

Back in the sleigh, Jorge wraps himself with a blanket. Pa approaches the sleigh and takes a shovel from it, saying that he is going to use the shovel to dig a tunnel. Jorge wonders if the supposed intruder was actually just a neighbor; he wonders if the Pedersen boy had simply jumped to a false conclusion. However, he cannot think why a neighbor would have been out in the blizzard. Jorge thinks about what it must have been like for the Pedersen boy to run through the snow during the snowstorm. Jorge returns to Pa and Hans and finds that they are attempting to dig a tunnel through a snowdrift on the far side of the house. Pa explains that it is a way of reaching the Pedersens’ barn unseen if there is actually an intruder in the house. However, this plan fails...
