Chapter 18 - 20 Summary and Analysis
Chapter 18: Sam Rayburn. Sam Rayburn was short and stocky. He was very tough, both physically and mentally. He had a very strong personality. His temper was well known and gauged by degrees. When he was in a bad mood, people steered clear of him as if of danger. When in a more congenial frame of mind, others liked to include him. He was very strong and determined: he was more of the sort where others would know where he stood and he would stick by it whether or not he had to stand alone and regardless of whether he might win or lose. One might say it depends upon "which end of it" one was - if he was defending your ground or championing your cause it was great; if he was the opposition then it's not so good...
