Summary

In Chapter 1, the rain falls on Kington, forcing everyone to stay indoors although the roof is leaking. Kasim, Molly, Ivy, and Arthur play board games like Monopoly. Harriet takes long walks in the rain while Alice reads more old letters from their grandparents' desk. Fran makes herself busy by cleaning and doing chores. Roland and Pilar sort through work that they brought with them or has been recently delivered, keeping mainly to themselves. Roland buys an electric heater to put in the rooms where he and Pilar spend their time working.

At one point, Roland walks into Molly's room without knocking, finding Molly and Kasim sitting close to each other on the bed. He tells his sisters that he is convinced that something is going on between Kasim and Molly and that he does not like it. He also notices that Ivy...
