Summary
Chapter 44 is titled “Lop,” who is Guilhem's bailiff. He likes the security of his job though it sets him in a position above most of the peasants of the area, which makes him lonely. His job is typically not too difficult, but he is struggling to deal with the woman they burned. Hugo arrives and asks questions about the execution. He is trying to be certain the woman they burned was really Dolssa.
Chapter 45 is “Botille.” They agree to hide Dolssa in the tavern's tiny cellar, which is more like a coffin, then remove everything that hints a woman has been staying in Dolssa's room. They have just finished dinner when Hugo, Lucien, and Lop enter. They search the building but do not find Dolssa.
