Odile Souchet - or Mrs. Odile Gustafson as she is known in Lily’s narrative - is a Paris native who married a man and moved to Montana after World War II. It is revealed through Odile’s own story that she lived in Paris under Nazi occupation and watched the decline of her city and its citizens before she accidentally betrayed her best friend and fled out of shame. Her greatest love is books and she cherishes her time at the American Library even when she has to leave for the United States. Furthermore, Odile developed her love of the Dewey Decimal system thanks to her Aunt Caro and can recite the exact location of any book or topic within the system.
