Summary

Chapter 13: Odile opens in Paris, August 1939 as Rémy leaves for the army. Paris gets more quiet as the days pass as people flee and lights are kept off at night to hide from air raids. Odile and her parents worry for Rémy and her life feels silent with both him and Paul gone. At the library, Odile tries to hide her anger towards Bitsi as she convinced Rémy to enlist, but Odile admits to Margaret that she did not listen to Rémy enough. Boris tries to comfort Odile with stories of his own army days but knows how hard it is to be left behind. However, all young men are conscripted into the army while ambassadors from other countries begin calling their citizens home. Paul receives permission to stay on his Aunt's farm and Odile is relieved to learn...
