Summary
In “Sophie,” Sophie recognized when she married Jacques that she was exchanging her beauty for his wealth. Since that time, however, his wealth has increased while her beauty has diminished.
Sophie remembers Ben made her uncomfortable one day when he mentioned he was intrigued by her accent. He asked her if she was originally from France. She did not give him a direct answer. Sophie later asked Jacques to make Ben leave, but he did not.
Sophie received a new note the following morning. Her blackmailer doubled the amount of money he wanted. She still did not tell Jacques, but sold another piece of jewelry to pay the demand.
