Summary

In “Jess,” after having listened more closely to the voicemail Ben left her, Jess is convinced something has happened to Ben. Jess calls the police, but hangs up when they ask for her name.

After Jess hangs up the phone, she hears footsteps following her. It is a woman who tells Jess that she is looking for Ben. When Jess tells the woman that Ben has disappeared, the woman’s face goes white and she runs away.

In “Jess,” Jess finds a notebook between the wall and the desk when she searches his apartment. Ben’s notes refer to “La Petite Mort” (114) which Jess knows means the little death. Ben indicates that Sophie knows, but he wonders how Mimi and the Concierge are involved. Jess is woken in the middle of the night by the sound of someone entering the apartment...
