Summary

Chapter 13 is set in 1981 in the Back Woods. Elle was 11, three years old than Jonas. She felt old enough to be his mother. Four years later, he changed her life.

When Elle went to the bathroom that morning, she discovered her period had started. She found Anna’s tampons. As she was inserting the tampon, she heard a noise and saw Conrad at the window. She screamed at him to go away and called him a freak. She changed into a swimsuit and went to the pond, embarrassed. She lay in the bottom of a canoe and wondered what it would be like to be dead. She thought about ways to force herself to drown.
