Summary
Chapter 5 – The following day, Ceony already hopes that Thane will return. The house seems lifeless without him. Ceony finds Fennel scratching at Thane’s study door, so she goes in. She begins going through his desk in curiosity. There is no family correspondence, but there is a Christmas card from Alfred Hughes. She finds an 1888-1889 Granger Academy yearbook. It is the same school Ceony attended twelve years after Thane. When Thane does not return home the next day, she begins to worry and goes into his bedroom. She cleans his clothes. The next day, Ceony finds a book in Thane’s bedroom entitled “The Thanes.” Inside are hymns and pressed wildflowers.
Six days after he leaves, Thane suddenly returns at six in the morning. He says his trip “went” and calls Ceony to the library to do paper boats. Ceony notices Thane’s...
