Summary

The next chapter is titled “Narrative of Gus Landor: 34” and dated December 12th. Landor stops at the dining hall where the steward named Cesar tells him Poe has been excused to see the doctor. Landor goes to Poe's room where he encounters John Allan. Allan quickly reveals that he is very frugal with his money. He says Poe is not trustworthy. He says he never adopted Poe, meaning he has no legal responsibility to support him. Thinking of Lea's changed attitude toward Poe, Landor says this is a bad time for Poe to receive another blow. Allan does not care. Landor says Poe is still young, and that Allan is being cruel. Landor says Poe is a better man than either Allan or himself. Landor briefly becomes physical, then walks away.
