Summary

The next chapter,“Narrative of Gus Landor: 24,” is dated December 5th. Landor and Poe are dinner guests at the Marquis home. Mrs. Marquis is wearing a black mourning dress for Ballinger but does not seem grief stricken. Landor does not find Lea as beautiful as Poe's descriptions. Over dinner, Dr. Marquis says Lea insisted that Artemus join the military, but Lea disagrees. Mrs. Marquis says they were only supposed to be at West Point a couple of years before returning to New York. Artemus makes several comments about the broken door on his dorm room, making it clear he knows Landor was involved. Mrs. Marquis screams out her anger at Artemus, breaks a plate on purpose, and leaves the room to chastise the maid. Artemus, Lea, and Dr. Marquis resume eating as if nothing happened.
