Summary

In the novel’s final chapter, “The Chain,” Krahe walks down the path to Faye’s house and attempts to open the back door. When Krahe notices the two women on the porch, he is mortified, but Faye invites him to sit down. Elsie leaves to go to bed, and Faye attempts to follow her, but Krahe asks her to stay.

Krahe tells Faye that he cannot understand why she ended their relationship. He informs Faye that he has not been with anyone since she left him. She is moved by this, and she lets him hold her hand. At the end of the night, Krahe does not try to stay, but instead leaves, an act which makes Faye feel closer to him.

The next morning, Faye comes downstairs and tells Elsie that they should sell the business and the house...
