Nicholas Hoel (Watchman)

Nicholas Hoel is the last in a long line of Hoel's who appreciated the Hoel chestnut. His ancestors planted one on their farm and it grew to an enormous size. Nicholas was inspired by this tree and used it an inspiration in his artwork. He is convinced by Olivia to join in protesting against the deforestation of giant redwood trees. He falls in love with her and vows to follow her anywhere she goes. He is renamed Watchman by Olivia and agrees to tree sit with her. His love for her grows and the pair become arsonists with three other people. They burn down machinery and impede progress. On their last arson run, Olivia is killed, which devastates Nick. After she dies, Nicholas roams the cities and forests creating pieces of art that make other humans reexamine their relationship with nature.
