Summary

This section starts with Nick's first person narration as he awakens in the north to birdsong. He knows he does not have much food left and will need to resupply soon but he makes his meager breakfast and is ready for the day. Mimi's narration is next as she reads the news story of Adam being sentences to jail. She believes that she should be in jail too and nearby sunbathers turn to look at her as she says something like "help me" (478). Other invisible eyes look at millions of new stories while she barely gets through one. The more she reads, the more evades her but the more these learners read, the more patterns they find.
