Summary
This section begins with Douglas' first person narration as he has his court hearing for interfering with the cutting down of the pine trees. The judge sentences him to three days of labor in helping the city arborist plant Oregon ashes. Douglas gladly plants the ashes and after he finishes with his sentence, he heads back to what is left of the trees the city cut down. He labels the rings in the wood and in doing so, meets Mimi Ma. The two realize that they feel similarly about the cutting down of these trees and Douglas convinces her to go with him to fight this injustice elsewhere.
