Point of View

This story is told from the limited first-person points of view of Amy and Cori. Amy is the central narrator of the novel. She tells the story from her point of view and in the present tense. Most of the chapters are introduced by journal entries written by Cori that update the reader not only on Cori’s progress on her summer reading project but also give her opinions of what is going on in her mother’s life. Cori also shares through her journal how the relationship is developing with her father. These journals give the only first-hand information that is known about Cori.

The remainder of the novel is narrated by Amy from her point of view. She shares her thoughts, emotions, and perspectives as she encounters the different experiences in New York. She is able to give information about other characters’ thoughts...
