Hong Kong is the country to which John traveled for a business meeting and then decided not to come home to his wife and children. He has been living in Hong Kong for three years. After John reconnects with the children, they agree to spend their Christmas vacation with him in Hong Kong.

It is while she is at the library conference that she meets Daniel and Kathryn. When Amy decides to allow her children to spend the rest of the summer with their father, she stays in New York.
