Amy Byler

Amy Byler is the wife of John, and the mother of Cori and Joe. Amy’s life stopped when John went to a business meeting in Hong Kong and never returned. Since that time, she has focused on the idea that she needs to live her life in a way that proves she does not need John. In several instances, it is suggested that Amy martyred herself when John left. Even though the idea of martyrdom is generally an idea associated with saints who are willing to die for their beliefs, the term fits Amy well because she attempts to kill her "self" as a woman in order to take the best care possible of her children. She sets unrealistic expectations for herself and will allow no one to help her.
