Summary
In Chapter 1, when Samuels arrived at Ralph’s house, Jeannie warned him that Ralph, who had been put on administrative leave, was not happy with him.
In Chapter 2, Samuels told Ralph that they had learned that the white van used in Frank’s murder had been stolen by a twelve-year-old boy.
As they tried to settle their differences, Samuels told Ralph a story about a newly married wife whose husband walked away while they were camping in the Mojave Desert. The wife followed the husband’s footprints until they came to an end but she never found her husband. Samuels believed the story served as a metaphor for the investigation of Terry. They followed the footsteps until they stopped and there would always be unanswered questions.
Ralph then told Samuels his own story of a perfectly good looking cantaloupe...
