Summary

In the prologue, Pammie narrates a short section in the present tense in which she watches Emily try on her wedding dress and promises not to ever let the wedding happen. She says that she failed once before, but she will not get things wrong again.

Chapter One jumps back in time and Emily, who narrates the rest of the novel, describes the first time she met Adam. She was at a work conference for recruitment consultants when she went to the bar to order a drink. The bartender ignored her and served Adam, a handsome man who jumped the queue, instead. She was frustrated, but then the bartender gave her a drink and said Adam had ordered it for her.
