Summary

Chapter 31 returns to the point of view of the woman living in Spain. She recalled her first time meeting the unnamed British journalist in Beirut. After writing, she went to a restaurant in town to eat dinner and afterwards to a concert, where she realized she was being followed. After the concert, a Russian agent by the name of Karpov escorted her home and showed her a letter containing what she believed to be a counterfeit message from an undisclosed sender. Karpov told her that Moscow Center wanted her to return to St. Petersburg, which she first rejected but then began to consider.
