Summary
In Chapter 14, Seymour told Gabriel about a Russian named Vladimir Gribkov who approached an MI6 agent in New York and declared his desire to defect. Gribkov alleged that he had knowledge concerning a highly placed mole in the Western intelligence community. MI6, skeptical of the claim, waited several weeks before taking action during which time Gribkov went to the Americans, who were furious at MI6 for waiting so long. During the ensuing argument between the U.S. and the U.K., Russia recalled Gribkov to Moscow where he disappeared, presumably murdered by the SVR, Russia’s intelligence division. Gabriel concluded that Alistair Hughes is the common denominator in the two botched defections, and decided to surveil him. Graham agreed on the condition that he have MI6 agent Christopher Keller on the team as well.
