Summary
Chapter 3 takes place ten days later. Waythorn visits Mr. Sellers’ at Mr. Sellers request. Sellers is still ill and unable to work. He explains to Waythorn that, before Sellers fell ill, Varick approached Sellers with an excellent investment opportunity. Varick needs Sellers to help negotiate the deal. Sellers asks if Waythorn can take on the project. Somewhat reluctantly, Waythorn agrees. Soon, Waythorn meets with Varick at Waythorn’s office. Waythorn soon feels somewhat self-conscious, as Varick is quite handsome and charismatic. During their business meeting, Waythorn explains, in detail, how the deal will function, and the monetary benefits that it will yield for Varick. Varick expresses deep gratitude. Varick then says, “It feels uncommonly queer to have enough cash to pay one's bills. I'd have sold my soul for it a few years ago!” (86).
