Summary
Sade lays in her bed, lamenting the fact that her plan did not turn out the way she had hoped. Suddenly, Femi shouts for her that their photographs are on the television. Uncle Dele is also giving a recorded interview on the news, imploring the British government to act.
Sade stays home from school for the next few days, bringing about the end of the term. Attempts by Mrs. King and Mrs. Appiah to cheer her only make her more miserable. She spends most of the day listening to music in her room and reading. She struggles to stay awake for long periods of time, waking to nightmares of “stick-thin people struggling across miles of sand” (228).
Mariam arrives at the house to visit Sade, bringing a card from the other schoolchildren. Sade takes out her own holiday card and finishes it for Mariam...
