Readjustments Stacy Faces After Waking From Coma
The most important theme in "The Other Side of Dark" is the changes that Stacy faces when she wakes from her four-year coma, including the need to grow up suddenly as she is now seventeen years old instead of thirteen as she feels. Stacy's life is turned upside-down when she wakes from a four-year-long coma caused by being shot. She is distraught to learn that Mom was killed on the same day she was shot, and she must also deal with the fact that her older sister, Donna, is now married and pregnant. Additionally, the whole dynamic of their family has changed since it is now just Stacy and Dad living at their house, and Dad works two jobs in order to pay Stacy's medical bills.
