Chapter 15 Summary

Crying, Jarrod insists Stacy cannot shoot him. He did not mean to kill her mother, but he did not know anyone was in the house and got scared when she appeared. She was scared and just kept telling him "it's all right" (page 182). Hands no longer shaking, Stacy points the gun at Jarrod's head, but picturing Mom, she is blinded by tears. Keeping the gun pointed at Jarrod, Stacy calls out to Mrs. Cooper for help, and the neighbor tells her she already called the police. When Jeff jumps the hedge and tells Stacy to give him the gun, she refuses, telling him to stay away because the police are on their way, but Jeff tells her that he is a police officer with the narcotics squad and takes the gun from her. Stacy does not understand how Jeff can be a policeman...
