Cigarettes

The cigarettes are symbols of inconsistencies and dissociation. Otto explains to his mother that when he told her about the bullying that she was sitting on the fire escape outside their apartment smoking a cigarette. Sadie asks Otto if that explanation even seems feasible since Sadie does not like heights and since she does not smoke cigarettes. Sadie learns that it is her alter personality, Camille, who smokes cigarettes.
