Shane
Shane is the 12-year-old protagonist of The Other Boy. He is born with the body of a girl and the mind of a boy. At age three, Shane realizes that his physiology and mentality are incompatible. Soon after, he begins transitioning from female to male. While his other, Rebecca, supports Shane throughout this process, his father, Adam, struggles to accept that Shane is transgender. As the novel progresses, Adam grows increasingly understanding of Shane, strengthening their previously delicate relationship. Meanwhile, Rebecca and Shane share a consistently loving and open relationship.
After spending the first eight years of his life living in San Francisco, Shane moves to Los Angeles with Rebecca following her divorce from Adam.
