Sunset
Sunset represents memories and the passage of time in the novel. Jaime remembers spending valuable time with his older brother when he sees "the reds burning into the cool greens and blues, he thought of Tomás and wondered if Tomás could see it too" (28).
Money
Money represents money and mobility. Jaime and Ángela's parents scramble to borrow enough money to send them on their journey to the United States. Once they have it, however, they believe their children can be safe in another country.
Borders
Borders represent freedom and new opportunity in the novel. Jaime and Ángela's travels into the United States are the only way to save their lives and ensure them the chance to have a brighter future outside of Guatemala.
