Point of View
The novel is narrated in the third-person, always from the perspective of Jaime as he attempts to escape the violent gangs of his home village in Guatemala and make it into the United States. The author places no limitations on the access to Jaime’s inner thoughts, allowing the reader to understand his true motivations, fears, and conflicts. Jaime is honest with the people in his life, and often the dialogue of the character’s reflects his inner feelings without him even going to the trouble to vocalize them himself, showing how easily his emotions are read by his family. Jaime wishes to reunite with his family and experiences longing to be close to them again as he makes his journey.
