Point of View

The narrative is written from the first-person perspective of America. This is fitting as it is her story and even though it is Maxon who is making the official selection, The One, is the story of America making her own selection. It is America who is going through a journey of growth and she is the one making the selection regarding what is right, and not right, for her life. The first person perspective is especially well-done as it gets into America’s head as she deals with both men and the tribulations that occur throughout the narrative. In addition, the perspective appeals to both older and younger readers. Older readers will recognize America’s situation and realize her follies.
