Summary

Chapter 1 begins with a brick flying through the windows as the remaining girls in the Selection are getting an etiquette lesson from Sylvia. They all complain in one way or another as Sylvia escorts them to their underground hiding place. There is confusion when they are about to enter their hiding place as a guard says the rebels have left, but Sylvia waits for official word that it is safe to return upstairs. When the word comes, a frustrated America goes to her room and discovers, through a letter from her younger sister May, that she is an aunt. She is upset that she was not able to be there and decides to go ahead with her maids’ plan to help her win Maxon and end the Selection. She wears a sexy dress to their next meal.
