Summary
In Chapter 21, Quinn does a shift at a local printing factory and thinks about his unfulfilled dreams. The narrative then shifts to an audio tape in which Ona further discusses her time at Lester Academy. She recalls that someone had propagated a rumor that Louise was sleeping with a student, and so Dr. Valentine fired Louise. Ona regretted not speaking in Louise’s defense.
In Chapter 22, Belle visits Ona and brings several records that she found at the state records office that prove Ona’s age. The records included an old census record and her children’s birth certificates, which list Ona’s age at the time of the children’s birth.
