The Ogress

The Ogress is never identified by name. She is referred to only as the Ogress. She is typical of all ogres of this time and place. She has already lived a very long life and knows her life will continue for many years. She wants desperately to truly belong, and she comes to believe that the people of Stone-in-the-Glen accept and love her because of her kindness. She begins to teach the crows the joy of sharing. She is highly intelligent and has figured out all sorts of inventions, but she cannot read. This means she cannot understand the warning message sent to her by the orphans or the signs against ogres posted all around the area.

The Ogress believes that she has a duty to be generous with her neighbors. She spends a lot of energy gardening and foraging, and she uses those things to cook...
