Summary

In Chapter 48, the Mayor is angry when he finds another book. No one seems to pay attention to his signs against books. The Mayor has been having trouble focusing lately, but knows that is not his fault. When it is time for his speech, he decides to get the people riled up against the Ogress again. Instead, one woman suggests they use what they can salvage around town to build a new school. She has a sign-up sheet for volunteers. The Mayor is shocked: “Since when did people just walk around carrying sign-up sheets” (356). An accountant wants to know where the tax money has gone.
