Summary

Chapter 31 is titled “Have I Mentioned That Everyone Loved the Mayor?” The Stone talks about the Mayor's expectations that everyone show appropriate levels of adoration all the time. The Mayor's home was once open to anyone who wanted to talk, but this Mayor stopped that practice. He said he could not expect everyone else to keep their homes locked and guarded unless he was willing to do the same. In this way, he makes the people aware of his wisdom. Everything had been working until lately. The Mayor is unsettled. The cobbler had not once said the Mayor is marvelous during his recent visit. He plans to give a speech today.
