Summary

In Chapter 19, a dwarf enters the dining hall with a demon called a Golem, later named Solomon. Fletcher immediately recognizes “the look of resentment” (106) on the dwarf's face because he had often been an outcast among the children of Pelt. Fletcher invites the dwarf, Othello, to sit with them. There is a moment of awkward silence but the others begin asking Othello questions about his mustache that leads to more conversation. Seraph is knowledgeable about history and talks about the arrival of the first humans when Corcillum was inhabited by dwarves. Othello talks about the restrictions dwarves face. They have to live in a specific area and are restricted by a population control law. They talk next about the academy. Seraph says the commoners are allowed to train but the ultimate tests are “weighted against us commoners” (109) who tend to have weaker demons...
