Summary
In Chapter 13, Fletcher is pursued at first and stays focused on escape. Lord Faversham owns most of the land through which Fletcher travels, and he knows he will have trouble explaining his presence if Faversham's men catch him. Fletcher becomes more conscious of the connection with Ignatius. When he realizes the demon is tense, he can comfort it with a thought. He tries to make it light a campfire, but it takes time to figure out how to pass along that message. Fletcher, finally feeling he has a moment to think, goes through the items Berdon gave him. There is a leather jacket Fletcher had planned to buy for himself, some money, and a birthday message from Berdon in which he announced he planned to make Fletcher a partner in his business.
