Summary
Chapter 36 is titled “Everything at Stake” and is dated May 10-May 30, 1779. Andre had a lot of people offering information, but Andre was never sure of their true intentions. A man named Joseph Stansbury told Andre that Arnold was willing to work with the British if it would bring the war to a faster end. Andre immediately went to his commander, British General Henry Clinton. Andre and Clinton had made lists of people they thought might join the British, but Arnold's name had never come up. A few days later, Arnold received a letter from Washington in response to Arnold's “wild” note insisting that he immediately go to trial. Washington was typically diplomatic, and urged Arnold to be patient. A short time later, Arnold received a favorable response from Andre and Clinton.
