Summary
Chapter 21 is titled “The Revolution Lives” and is dated October 12-November 2, 1776. The Americans moved the wounded below deck in the hope their moans would not be heard. They muffled the oars with cloth. They lit dim lanterns on the back of the boat, sheltered on the sides to be seen only from the rear. With only that dim light as a guide, each slipped past the British ships. Though the Americans are close enough to hear the British talking and working, the British remain unaware. Arnold's ship is the last out. He is eight miles away when daylight breaks. The Americans hoped to reach Point Crown where cannons on the shore would protect them. The British caught them at noon.
