Summary
Chapter 11 is titled “Critical and Alarming” and is dated October 19-October 29, 1775. The men easily paddled up the Dead River until the rain began to cause flooding. A storm drove them to high ground in the middle of the night on October 19. They lost several boats and more food while traveling only a half mile, and named the place Camp disaster. Arnold asked his officers whether to continue north or turn back. They agreed to go on. Arnold set off with a few men in the hope of finding food. Colonel Roger Enos, in charge of the division bringing up the rear, turned back with 300 men and all the remaining food. One soldier wrote that the men were furious and prayed that Enos and his soldiers would “die by the way, or meet with some disaster.” The others continued forward. They boiled their shoes...
