Rose
Rose is the first person narrator and main character of the novel. Ever since Rose was a teenager, she knew she did not want to become a mother. Instead, she wanted to pursue academic success, a satisfying career, and a deep romantic relationship. Though she verbalized these feelings to her friends and family, everyone thought, and hoped, she would change her life.
After completing her PhD in sociology, Rose decided to get her portrait taken in her graduation gown. She thought giving the photograph to her parents would help them understand the importance of her life and work. When she met local photographer, Luke, she did not expect to fall in love. Luke not only listened to her, but suggested he photograph her candidly giving him a tour of her university campus. Shortly thereafter, she and Luke began an intimate relationship.
