The Nightingale

The nightingale is a symbol of sorrow. Because of the quality of the nightingale's song, it is a bird that has usually been associated with tragedy. This symbolism is strengthened by its association with the tragic story of Philomela.

Springtime

Spring represents rebirth. The poem is set in spring, and the poet is conscious of the revitalization of the natural world that accompanies it. However, for the poet, as for the nightingale, this season only leads to a new opportunity for sorrow.

Songs

Songs represent emotional expression. For the nightingale, this is quite literal – Philomela has only bird-song with which to communicate her grief. The poem itself also takes on the form of a song, using repetition to strengthen the image of sorrow it conveys.
