Summary
Wood Mountain convinces Patrice to give him the addresses she will search, so he can find her if necessary. He tries out the smile he practices in the mirror, and her eyes widen. He thinks she is impressed, but she senses he is imitating something.
Patrice sleeps after Wood Mountain leaves, and when she wakes a small woman sits next to her, knitting a white baby blanket. The woman asks about Patrice’s trip, and when she hears that Vera and her baby are missing, she offers to pray for them. The woman continuously prays and knits until the train stops in Minneapolis. She offers Patrice the finished blanket for the baby.
